Board Observer Program
Board experience is often seen as a crucial step toward leadership and executive roles, yet many organisations require prior experience to join a board—creating a "chicken-and-egg" challenge for emerging leaders.
This program helps break that cycle by giving you valuable exposure to governance in action. You’ll gain insights into strategic decision-making, risk management, and stakeholder engagement that can accelerate your career.

Whether you’re already in the space sector or looking to transition into it, this experience will position you as a future leader with the knowledge and confidence to contribute at the highest levels.

What does a board observer do?
As a board observer, you will attend monthly or bi-monthly virtual board meetings to gain firsthand experience of how boards operate.

While you won’t have formal responsibilities, such as voting or decision-making, you will observe key discussions on governance, strategy, and organisational priorities. You’ll have the opportunity to see how experienced board members approach complex issues, balance competing priorities, and make high-level decisions.

A board member will also be available to answer your questions and provide context outside of meetings, helping you deepen your understanding of governance and leadership.

What does success look like as a participant?
Success in this program means being an engaged and prepared participant. This includes:
-
Attending all board meetings on time and staying present throughout.
-
Communicating professionally with ASDA and the host board.
-
Researching the organisation and its industry before the program begins to maximise your learning.
-
Asking thoughtful questions to your assigned board contact to contextualise what you observe.
-
Contributing a reflective statement at the end of the program, summarising your key learnings and how you plan to apply them.
